Ganoderma lucidum              Lacquered Polypore

Fruitbodies are bracket-form or stalked, 5-30 cm wide, semicircular to fan-shaped, smooth, azonate to concentrically grooved, yellowish near margin, red-brown to mahogany in older parts, with a laquered surface. Pores are white to cream, ochre in age, 4-6 per mm, round, and in a single layer.  Widespread and fairly common on hardwoods.  A similar species, G. tsugae, fruits on conifers.
