Geastrum saccatum               Nested Earth Star

Fruitbodies are 2-4 cm across when fully opened, buff to tan, with 5-8 reflexed arms.   Spore-sac is 0.5-2 cm across and nests in the reflexed arms (saccate).    The mouth (peristome) of the spore sac is silky striate and clearly defined from the remainder of the sac.  This species is recognized by its small size and nesting habit.  Widespread and not uncommon it fruits on the ground under conifers.
