Hygrophorus russula                Russula Waxcap

Caps are 5-12 cm, slippery when wet, smooth or streaked with darker hairs, fleshy, hemispherical to convex, with inrolled margin, becoming flat or knobbed, reddish to pink, and darker at centre.  Gills are attached, becoming decurrent, close, white to pink, and stain purplish. Stalks are up to 7 cm tall by 3 cm broad, dry, white, and stain pink. Spore prints are  white.  Widespread but not common, this species fruits under hardwood trees.  Edible.
