Caps are 1-4 cm across, convex becoming flat, with down-turned margin, deeply umbilicate, bright yolk-yellow, dry, and with a crimped margin. Gills are coloured as the cap, decurrent, and far apart. Stalks are dry, up to 6 cm tall by 6 mm wide, coloured as cap, smooth. It fruits under conifers. Seldom reported, this species is thought by some to be the same as H. nitida but the latter as recognized in the NE is very slimy overall.
