Agaricus bitorquis            Sidewalk Mushroom  

Caps are 3-12 cm, smooth to silky, dry, convex becoming flat and sometimes depressed, white or with a yellow or ochre tinge. Flesh is white, and not staining. Gills are free, close to crowded, narrow, pink, and become very dark-brown. Stalks are short and stout, up to 5 cm tall by 2.5 cm wide, smooth, and white. Ring is double, white, and persistent. Spore prints are  purple-brown. Also known as Agaricus edulis, it favours hard-packed soil. Edible.  Photo: Brian Shelton
