Sarcodon imbricatus

Caps are 5-20 cm across, convex to flattened with a central depression and covered with coarse, dark brown zonate scales on a pale brown background. Spines are up to 1 cm long and whitish to tan becoming brown. Stalks are up to 8 cm tall, central to off-centre and hollow. The flesh is white with a disagreeable taste. Widespread but not common, it fruits under conifers. Not edible.
