Sporangiophores (stalks) of Dictyostelium showing the individual amoebae that have been sacrificed, for the common good, to form the building blocks of cellulose that make up the support stalk for the sporangium (spore head) and protect the reproductive units from the 'madding' crowd of ravenous microfauna below that would readily consume them.
