In Stemonitis the capillitium arises from a stout, central columella and forms a three dimensional network to support the spore mass. There are no 'free' ends as there are in Comatricha and the capillitium forms a surface net. The capillitial network supports the spore mass and the spores are released a few at a time for more effective spacial and temporal distribution. You can see a few of the tiny spherical spores still trapped in the capillitium.
