Amanita vaginata Grisette
Amanita vaginata is commonly called "Grisette" because of its grey colour. In the east, the common variety is brown not grey and is referred to as "Tawny Grisette" which seems a bit of a contradiction of names. I found this handsome pair of "true" Grisettes in Mendocino County, California. The 'Tawny Grisette' of eastern NA is often referred to as Amanita fulva and this implies a species rather than a varietal distinction. When the dust settles from the molecular studies who knows what we will have?
