Tyromyces ptychogaster

At first this oddball western fungus appears as a shaggy lump of  soft, white to dirty white or grey mycelium on dead wood.  You can just see a piece of this shaggy material sticking up at the back of the picture.  At maturity, a layer of pores is produced on the underside.  I have not seen this species in the east but it is found in Europe.
