Plant Interactions

What is a plant cell's initial reaction to different abiotic and biotic environmental stimuli?

We are using different live-cell probes and a collection of Arabidopsis mutants to document the earliest intracellular responses of plant cells to diiverse environmental stimuli. Eventually, the data acquired for many different plant species, and compiled for an exhaustive Early Intracellular Response Profiling of Plants (EIRPP), will be linked to pertinent molecular-genetic information to allow us to, (1) understand signal transduction in plants better and (2), devise specific and innovative strategies for modifying / introducing desirable traits in agronomically important plants.

The accompanying interactive animation summarizes the underlying concept for the EIRPP program. It shows the local initiation of a cellular response and its subsequent spread to neighboring cells. (Move your cursor over the bead in the picture!)
