Tuning Your Dial to CFRU|
By Dave Hauch
Tune your dial to 93.3FM, and you'll find out what community radio is all about. CFRU is your radio station, an outlet for your voice, and a place you'll find the most eclectic mix of programming on one frequency. This station is 250 watts of community power!
So what does it mean to be a community radio station? Well, for one, the programming you'll find coming out of CFRU is unlike anything you'll find on The Edge or Q107. CFRU prides itself on being "no-hit radio" so the music you'll hear is fresh, new, and never overplayed. The station also offers numerous spoken-word programs, giving members of the community a chance to express their voice over the airwaves. In the grand mix you'll find everything from Canadian indie music to political activism, from queer and women's collectives to reggae and environmentalism, brought to you in a variety of languages. Oh yeah…and news from the BBC.
So now comes the burning question…how can you get involved with your radio station? CFRU is volunteer driven, and for that very reason, there are many ways you can get involved. From stocking the CD library to producing ads and show promos, and of course you can always try your hand at being an on-air programmer. To find out how to get involved, drop by the station on the 2nd floor of the UC (at the end of the clubs hallway), and find out what would be best for you.
