The Wellness Centre: Wellness at Work|
By Marlene Pfaff
Welcome to an exciting year at the University of Guelph! In the up coming months, we can all expect to be swamped with deadlines, papers, midterms, exams, financial strains, roommate troubles, overdue library books, broken alarm clocks, warn-out day timers, and many other challenges that go along with leading a hectic lifestyle. Sounds scary, but it's the reality of a university student. As you have found out already, life has the habit of throwing us a lot of curve balls, some of which we may not be ready for, but all of which we're capable of handling! Sometimes we just need a little extra help along the way.
The Wellness Centre at the University of Guelph has a lot to help provide you with that little extra help. Our great team of Peer Helpers and Volunteers as well as myself, Marlene Pfaff, dedicate ourselves to raising your awareness on many important issues concerning all aspects of wellness. If we at The Wellness Centre had to sum it all up in one statement, it would be this: Wellness is not just an absence of sickness. Wellness is a state of mind. It is about feeling good about YOU, liking who you are, and learning how to take care of you. In our busy lives, we often forget about taking care of ourselves, and then all of the sudden we feel stressed out, depressed or just plain frazzled. Sound familiar? This is why the Wellness Centre team wants to let you know that there is support along the way. If you ever feel like that curve ball hit you right in the face, come-on over and check out the many resources and programs offered through The Wellness Centre: Happy, Healthy Relationships; Hot and Spicy Recipes for Love; Wellness - Keeping a Balance; Stress Management; The Wellness Fair; Safe Break; DrinkWise; AIDS Awareness Week; MOCKTOBERFEST; Drug Awareness Week and many, many more.
The Centre is also a fantastic place to come and simply browse. There are a variety of pamphlets, videos, posters, buttons, books, fact sheets, and info. packages on many issues: all the different methods of contraception; alcohol and drug use; HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, and safer sex information for individuals of all sexual orientations; eating for energy, nutrition, body image and eating disorders; harassment, sexual assault, physical and emotional abuse; healthy relationships; stress and time management, etc., etc. You could read for an entire year and still not see everything The Wellness Centre has to offer! We encourage you to drop by to chat and/or pick up some free condoms; they come in a variety of wonderful colours and sometimes, flavours (watermelon has been the most popular this year!). And, if you wish, we can also give you a quick demo on how to make a dental dam!
We at The Wellness Centre feel strongly about promoting wellness and health issues. You may see our displays, as well as our peers and volunteers, popping up across campus throughout the school year, as we are constantly developing and presenting educational programming for your residence, club, or group. In addition, the Wellness Education Training Troupe, (WETT), spreads the Wellness ways using Social Action Theatre as their method of communicating their message. They will present "Let's Monkey Around" during Orientation Week and will be performing in classrooms and other places all year long. Keep your eyes and ears open for their informative and entertaining perfomances! The Wellness Team insists upon creating an environment which is safe, confidential and welcoming. If you ever feel you need to relax, talk to someone who is ready & willing to listen without interrupting or judging you, or ask questions about certain issues, please do not hesitate to drop by The Wellness Centre. We're located on the 2nd floor of the Powell Building. We are here to assist you with your ultimate goal of taking good care of yourself - we know you are important! Please don't hesitate to call the Wellness Centre at ext. 53327, or better yet, swing by and say hello!
Wellness Is ...
Wellness is a choice - a decision you make to move toward optimal health.
Wellness is a way of life - a lifestyle you design to achieve your highest potential for well-being.
Wellness is a process - a developing awareness that there is no end point, but that health and happiness are possible in each moment, here and now.
Wellness is an efficient exchange of energy - energy received from the environment, transformed within you, and sent on to affect the world outside.
Wellness is the integration of body, mind and spirit - the appreciation that everything you do, and think, and feel, and believe has an impact on your state of health.
Wellness is the loving acceptance of yourself.
