Janet Carnochan, 1839-1926

Niagara library trustee

Janet Carnochan was born 14 November 1839 at Stamford, Ontario. She taught school in southern Ontario for many years. She is known mostly as a founder of the Niagara Historical Museum at Niagara-on-the-Lake, but she also was a library trustee in this community for many years. She published a history of the library, "Niagara library, 1800 to 1820" in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute 4 (1892-93): 336-56. She attended a number of the early annual meetings of the Ontario Library Association and served as a councillor in 1904 and 1909-10. She died at Niagara on 1 April 1926. A provincial plaque situated on the Niagara Historical Museum grounds records her contributions.
