Mechanics' Institute founded 1841 |

|
A mechanics' institute was founded at Dundas in 1841. More than a half century later, in 1895, it became a public library (not free) issuing memberships on a subscription basis. The library was housed in a hotel block on King Street. In 1904, a Carnegie promise was secured and more spacious accommodation was provided for residents.
