Research Opportunities
UPDATED by

Undergraduate Students
Work Study: During the Fall
and Winter semesters, we typically hire several Work Study students to
help out with research in the lab. These positions are advertised
at the beginning of the semester on the University of Guelph’s student
financial services web site.
Independent Research:
Inquiries about doing independent research in the lab are welcomed at
any time. The nature and timing of opportunities varies, but
there are a number of potential projects to work on, and I am happy to
collaborate with students on developing new ideas for research.
Students interested in independent research must register for two
semesters (Fall and Winter) of Research in Integrative Biology
(IBIO*4500/4510) or for the year long Thesis in Integrative Biology
(IBIO*4521/4522).
Summer Research Assistants: We
typically hire 1-2 summer students to do research with us during the
summer. Students are usually hired through the NSERC Undergraduate
Summer Research Awards (USRA) and Undergraduate Research Assistantships
(URA) programs. Open positions are advertised early in the Winter
semester.
Graduate Students
I am seeking 1 or 2 students to join the lab in Fall 2012.
Inquiries from students interested in M.Sc. and Ph.D. projects are
welcomed at any time. If you are interested in graduate school,
and wish to work with us in the Maherali Lab, please read
this letter
to prospective graduate students. I encourage interested students
to apply for external funding through the Natural Science and
Engineering Research Council of Canada postgraduate scholarship program
(NSERC PGS) and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship program (OGS).
Deadlines for these proposals are in mid-November.
Postdoctoral Opportunities
All postdoctoral positions are currently filled. However, I
encourage interested candidates to contact me to discuss potential
collaboration
and strategies for obtaining external funding to support collaborative
research. I encourage interested candidates to apply to the
NSERC PDF program to obtain funding for postdoctoral research.
