Safety Online

At OUTline, we understand that the coming-out process can be difficult. Finding lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer, two-spirit, ally resources and navigating lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer, two-spirit, ally sites is not always easy when there are people looking over your shoulder. Here are some tips to help you navigate this and other sites while protecting your privacy:

  1. Hide the Page If someone walks in and you need to quickly navigate away from the site, click the University of Guelph logo in the top left corner of any page to be taken to the University of Guelph homepage. Another strategy is to have a second browser window open that is larger than the one you are viewing this site in, placed so the edges spill over this one. That way you can quickly click to it and cover up this page.
  2. Stealthy Bookmarks When you're prompted to save a bookmark, give it a secret name. That way if roomates, siblings, parents or friends are looking through your bookmarks they won't know what it is. As added security, you can bury it in a folder within your bookmarks menu.
  3. Clearing your Browser's Files Get familiar with your browser's privacy features inclduing how to delete your cache and viewing history. You can usually set a browser up to clear these items every time you close the program.
