A systematic review and meta-analysis has shown that
bacteria isolated from conventional poultry, swine and beef production
exhibited a higher prevalence of resistance to antimicrobials; however,
the recovery of some resistant strains was also identified in organic
animal production. The study has been conducted by researchers in
Department of Population Medicine at University of Guelph, Laboratory
for Foodborne Zoonoses in Public health
Agency of Canada, and Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at

A risk factor analysis conducted by
the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has shown that Salmonella
contaminated carcasses were more likely to be derived from Salmonella infected
pigs. Yet the healthy pigs may lead to contaminated carcasses
indicating a possible cross-contamination in the processing plants.
EFSA has encouraged the pig industry to develop and enhance Salmonella
controls at the farm-level and at slaughterhouses. Read
