one-time placements

tips for success

Find a Volunteer Placement Early

If you wait to the last minute to find one, you may not recieve a volunteer placement that is as suitable for you.

Be Passionate

What sounds more appealling: "I need to volunteer" or "I want to volunteer". It's little, but to volunteer coordinators, it goes a long way. If you show your passion about a volunteer placement or a specific subject, your chances of getting a great placement greatly increase.

Be Professional

Whether you are emailing, phoning, or in person, be sure to use appropriate body, verbal, and written language. When in the community, you are representing not only yourself, but the university and student population. Respect goes along way.

Be Persistent

Volunteer coordinators are busy people so they may not always reply to you right away. Be sure to give them some time to get back to you. If it has been more than 5 days, be sure to contact them again (in a respectful manner.) TIP: try contacting them through different ways - phone - email - or in person (in person is most effective)

These one-time placements primarily serve as an opportunity for University of Guelph students who have been sanctioned by the Judicial Committee or Student Housing Services to pay off their fines through community service. In co-operation with the Judicial Committee and Student Housing Services of the University of Guelph, we assist sanctioned students with finding a low-committment volunteer placement within our network of community-benefit organizations. We do our best to match students based on their interests and degree programs in order to encourage them to stick with volunteering after their mandatory hours are complete.

However, these placements may also be utilized by students simply wishing to get involved in low-commitment volunteer positions or who are just beginning their first steps into volunteerism.

I have been sanctioned

After being sanctioned, you may have the option of volunteering to pay off your fee. You are in charge of finding a volunteer placement, fulfilling its requirements, and then reporting to the appropriate staff member of either the Judicial Committee or Student Housing Services.
