Yummy Pupa I've eaten larvae and pupae during this trip to China, and they're quite delicious. The outer covering when deep fried taste like potato chips. I have a story about my pupa-eating adventure. Just outside the gates of the University is a farmers' market. Actually it's a parking-lot, bus-stop, taxi-stand by day, but from 5am-7am it's an early farmers' market and from 7pm to midnight it's a night market. I went for a walk early in the morning and it was really bustling. There was this one small stand where these people were hawking what looked like small roots. I took a closer look and saw that they were pupae (see image attached). I then asked if I could take a picture rather than being sneaky about taking a picture. The guy got quite upset and starting yelling at me. I couldn't tell all the words he was saying, but it was something along the lines of, "Who do you think you are taking pictures of other people's stuff" and "get the hell out of here", and "Why the hell do you want pictures anyways" and other such stuff which I can't translate. I calmly said to him that I am from overseas. Then he started ranting again that I was trying to trick him and there's no way that I could be from abroad. Then I calmly said to his woman companion that I'm from Canada. After she heard how I spoke and pronounced Canada, she said, of course he's from overseas. Then the guy immediately quieted down and said, in that case, go ahead and take pictures. All the while with this commotion, other Chinese had started to gather around. The Chinese have very little personal distance and they always want to know what's happenning, so I even had some pressing up against me, especially to see what a foreigner from Canada looked like. So I took my pictures and they even offered to give me a couple of pupae for free. I did end up taking one, more to show the crowd that it was edible than actually wanting to eat it, and then took off. Actually the skin was pretty good, but the innards were starchy, rather than shrimp-like which I had been hoping for.
