WRS Facilities
Upon your arrival at the WRS, you will be given a tour of all the major aspects of the facility by a member of the staff.
Cabins:
Researchers are usually housed in small, but beautiful and rustic, two-person lakeside cabins. Each of these cabins contains electric heat, 2 beds, a desk, 2 closets, a fire extinguisher and smoke detector. Your cabin is considered your home during your stay and will be treated as such.
You are responsible for keeping your living quarters clean. At the very least, we expect you to sweep and mop your floors and empty your garbage cans when needed.
Cookhouse:
The cookhouse is the centre of social life at the station and must be maintained in a clean state at all times; i.e.: books, games, cards, papers, magazines, etc. are put away after their use. Do not leave any personal or research items lying around in the cookhouse.
*N.B. All meals are announced by the ringing of a historic gong. No one is to start the meal before the sounding of the gong! Subject to enforcement by the cooks.
After all meals, you are responsible for the proper loading of your dishes into the dishwasher. You will be assigned to a dish-group and after dinner the designated dish-group will be responsible for the complete clean up of the kitchen and dining room.
Laboratories:
Check out a 360° tour of our Upper Lab, Parasite Lab, and Turtle Lab
There are four different labs located at the WRS. Your needs and affiliations will determine which lab you will be using. If you are a first-time user of the station, please let the manager know your needs well in advance of your arrival.
By law, all field laboratories must be kept in a clean and sanitary state (Animals for Research Act, regulation 24, section 4, subsections 2-4). The management will make sure laboratories are being maintained in an acceptible condition.
Bathrooms:
The WRS provides a washroom complex with a separate bathroom for both men and women. Each bathroom contains two showers, multiple sinks and toilets, and a small amount of space in which you can store personal toiletry items. Additionally, there is a washing machine, clothes line, and dryer available for use.
Internet access and personal computers:
The WRS makes available a dedicated email computer for all researchers. We are limited to a dial-up connection. However, there is space to set up personal computers. This space is limited, so laptops are preferred, but accommodations can be made for desktops depending on the time of year and space available.
What to Bring:
Recreation:
The research station provides and maintains three campfire pits (with firewood), sand-covered volleyball court and a regulation horseshoe pit. All are available for use when spare time allows. Canoes are available for recreational trips into and around the research area (the WRS is located on the southern edge of one of Algonquin Park's largest Wilderness Zones).
The WRS is located halfway between the East and West gates of Algonquin Park along the Highway 60 corridor. This central location provides convenient access to all Algonquin Park exhibits and recreational facilities. Highly recommended among these are: the Algonquin Park Visitor Centre; Logging Museum; Art Gallery; Minnesing mountain biking trail, and the many famous self-guided hiking trails all along the corridor.
For more information, please contact the WRS manager.
