Attending the University of Calgary's Conference on Post-secondary Learning and Teaching would provide me the opportunity to share my MSc thesis work, which has focused on creating a student-led, co-curricular experiential learning opportunity for upper year students in the Human Health and Nutritional Sciences. Through my poster presentation, it would allow me to share how other institutions and departments can implement student-led co-curricular opportunities based on what we have achieved through my MSc work. Additionally, it would provide me with the opportunity to receive feedback on the program to implement in my final semester. My upcoming poster presentation "Co-Curricular Experiential Learning Opportunities" will be my first presentation at an Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference, allowing me to gain experience presenting at an academic conference while sharing my MSc thesis work in a formal setting for the first time. The University of Calgary's Conference on Post-secondary Learning and Teaching conference was a natural fit for the content of my presentation as my work on a graduate student led co-curricular experiential learning opportunity fit into their theme of student-led authentic learning experiences. As a result, receiving the COESP travel award help facilitate my attendance at this conference where I can receive experience while sharing my research at a relevant SoTL conference.

Learning Innovation Summit, Mountain View, California

The Learning Innovation Summit 2018 brings together science educators ranging from early schooling through to graduate level teaching and introduces them to new digital learning tools and practices. The Summit consists of presentations by leaders and practitioners of novel technological innovations and how they arebeing used in modern science classrooms. My interests, in addition to attending presentations by thought leaders that are currently implementing these practices, will be in the demonstrations of new technologies that I would like to bring to my teaching of a large first year course (BIOL*1090). In particular, I am interested in experiencing the demonstrations on cutting edge-edge animations and a virtual cell that I would like to try out in my class, which focuses on cell biology. Demonstrations of technologies such as virtual reality simulations and holographic projection show promise in relaying to students the 4-dimensional complexities of a living cell. In addition, I will attend workshops and roundtable discussions with other educators to share ideas on teaching modern scientific concepts. I believe that the use of visually exciting representations of biological systems help students to understand, retain and apply knowledge of these complex systems.

This conference is all about biology education research, which is the cornerstone of the COESP. My attending this conference would help spread the word aboutthe COESP and connect us to other groups who might share our vision all while showcasing biology education research happening at Guelph. Since this conference is in Minnesota, a travel award will help with the cost of a plane ticket, accommodations, and registration for the conference itself.

McMaster Symposium on Education & Cognition, Hamilton, Ontario

Cognitive scientists have been systemically studying processes such as attention, memory and learning for more than 150 years. This rich resource of knowledge has been only recently applied to developing evidence-based interventions in education. The speakers in this Symposium will explore how cognitive principles can inform instructional design and critical issues in education to bridge the gap between the lab and classroom.
