Making an open access e-textbook for Introductory Biochemistry 

BIOC*2580 Introductory Biochemistry has an annual enrolment of about 1500 students each year and research by instructors indicates that only 10-15% of student actually buy the textbook, which is costly and might represent a barrier to access. We propose to produce an open access e-textbook for BIOC*2580 Introductory Biochemistry by converting pre-existing coursenotes, figures from the powerpoint slides, examples of quiz questions and problem sets. This proposal will support a senior Work Study undergraduate student to obtain or generate open access figures and organize and format the text of the e-textbook using our available resources under the supervision of the instructing team. We expect the first version of e-textbook to be piloted in Summer 2020.

 

Understanding variation through active learning

BIOL*1070‚ Discovering Biodiversity, is a first year core introductory biology course that is taken by approximately 1,500 students every calendar year. It is the flagship course of the Department of Integrative Biology and our first opportunity to engage students in their academic careers. We propose to develop a seminar activity that guides students to appreciate inter-species and intra-species variation as they learn to use dichotomous keys for identification. Using specialised, though readily available, lenses that attach to any model of smart phone, students will learn how to capture images of the relevant variation, upload these to an archive, and analyse these images to generate a data set which they will then analyse.
