OAHN Swine Small Scale Herd Postmortem Project- May 2020

The Ontario Animal Health Network (OAHN) is funding a study at the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL)  to identify disease issues in small scale swine herds in Ontario. The study provides an opportunity for veterinarians to investigate health problems in small herds.  Postmortem exams and associated tests at the Animal Health Laboratory will be subsized for participating herds.  Through this work, we hope to also establish and expand connections with small scale producers in the province.

Requirements for herds to qualify for enrollment in the project:

  • swine herd is located in Ontario and has ≤50 sows, or ≤1000 hogs marketed per year
  • herd has a Premises Identification Number (PID)

To enroll a herd in the project and access testing, the herd veterinarian must FIRST contact Dr. Josepha DeLay (jdelay@uoguelph.ca   519-824-4120 ext  54576). Enrollment must be done BEFORE submitting any samples.

Important instructions for veterinarians and producers:

  • All cases must be submitted by the herd veterinarian.
  • Test results will be released only to the herd veterinarian.
  • A submission form and producer survey must be fully completed and submitted to be eligible for subsidized testing.
  • Disease investigation includes post-mortem (PM) examination and related testing, either at the Animal Health Laboratory (Guelph or Kemptville), OR on-farm post-mortem and sampling by the herd veterinarian.
  • PM at the AHL is encouraged.  The producer is responsible for transportation of carcasses to the AHL.
  • For on-farm PMs, full completion of the appropriate submission form (including gross PM findings) and strict adherence to sampling requirements are necessary in order to be eligible for subsidized testing.
  • For on-farm PMs, sampling supplies will be provided to the veterinarian.  Delivery will be arranged during the initial contact to enroll the herd (see above).
  • See links below for sample lists, based on the age of pigs and clinical syndrome.
  • For pigs ≤40 kg, 1-3 animals may be included in the submission / case.
  • For pigs >40 kg, only 1 animal may be included in the submission / case.
  • At this time, each herd’s participation is limited to 1 submission /case.
