Greedy, Ambitious, and Proud: The Rise and Fall of the Countess of Arran - Lisa Baer-Tsarfati @ Centre for Scottish Studies

"Greedy, Ambitious, and Proud: The 'Unnatural' Rise and 'Justified' Fall of Elizabeth Stewart, countess of Arran" uses the political career of the countess of Arran (said by some literary scholars to be the inspiration for Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth) as a case study to explore long-standing tropes about female ambition and the ways in which these tropes have negatively impacted (and continue to negatively impact) how powerful women are perceived and treated. It will be hosted by the Centre for Scottish Studies on 23 February 2021 at 12 PM EST / 5 PM GMT / 9 AM PST.
