Joseph (J) Shea-Carter

Joseph (J) Shea-Carter specializes in queer theory and contemporary Canadian poetics. Their PhD in particular is dedicated to foregrounding a unique mode of queer analysis by closely reading the works of Jordan Abel, T. Liem, and Lisa Robertson.
Their secondary area of research delineates emergent connections between sound, literature, and music. In 2023 they collaborated with Jordan Abel to soundtrack him reading from his award-winning experimental novel, Empty Spaces. They have also written for Amodern where they have covered the sound artists Jack Rollo and Elaine Tierney (who are Time is Away on NTS Radio).
J is currently an instructor in the English department (SoTEC) at the University of Guelph. In 2022 they were nominated for and won the College of Arts Teaching Excellence Award. Outside of Guelph they are also a lecturer in the Studies in Arts & Culture Department (STAC) at Brock University.
They have published or have forthcoming work in The Ex-Puritan, ARC Poetry Magazine, The Capilano Review, The Malahat Review, and Canadian Literature.

J completed their MA in English Literature at the University of Toronto in 2015. In 2014 they graduated with an honours BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Toronto with high distinction.
