Accounting professor Fred Pries has been honored with the Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants (FCPA) designation, one of the most prestigious marks of distinction from CPA Ontario. He is one of 69 accounting professionals to receive the honour this year. The Fellows designation aims to recognize business leaders who are masters of navigating an ever-changing business landscape, and have an impressive track record of serving their organizations and communities.

Throughout his career, Pries has made numerous contributions to the accounting profession, ranging from his work in industry to his commitment to education. Prior to joining the College of Business and Economics, he served as a partner at KPMG. After joining the College, he spearheaded the development and launch of the Accounting major. Under his leadership, the major received CPA accreditation and has become one of the largest majors in the Bachelor of Commerce program. He was also integral to the development of the Graduate Diploma in Accounting.

On the research front, Pries has published 15 papers and cases on accounting and managing innovation. He has also presented his work at more than 50 national and international conferences.

In addition to his role at the University of Guelph, Pries also serves as vice-chair of the Auditing & Assurance Standards Board Canada, helping to develop and monitor its strategic and operating plans. He also serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the Issues in Accounting Education journal and recently retired from the Board of Directors of the Guelph Business Enterprise Centre Inc.

This year’s FCPAs have been selected from a world-class pool of experience, skills and expertise across the profession. Pries and all of the inductees will be honoured at a presentation ceremony and dinner on December 5, in Toronto.
