Posted on Friday, September 21st, 2018

University of Guelph business alumnus Gavin Armstrong appeared on last night’s season premiere of Dragons’ Den, pitching Lucky Iron Fish and his social enterprise Lucky Iron Fish Enterprise (LIFE).

LIFE is a Toronto-based social enterprise dedicated to reducing iron deficiency through simple innovations.

Developing a business model that gives back to those in need by donating a Lucky Iron Fish with each purchase, his entrepreneurialism and business embodies the spirit of the University of Guelph’s commitment to improve life.

“Gavin is a great example of what Guelph business students stand for: entrepreneurial thinking, sustainability, collaboration and taking action,” says Julia Christensen Hughes, Dean of the College of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. "Through Lucky Iron Fish, he's addressing one of the world's most pressing social health issues, through using business as a force for good. He's demonstrating the ability to build impact at scale and it's encouraging to see him inspiring other future leaders and social entrepreneurs to do the same."

The certified B Corporation company is in it’s sixth year and has distributed over 190,000 units worldwide. At the end of his pitch, Gavin partnered with two dragons. Watch the full episode online at CBC TV (Gavin's pitch is around 13:35).

Armstrong commercialized the Lucky Iron Fish in 2012 while completing his PhD in Biomedical Science at the University of Guelph. He graduated from the Bachelor of Commerce program at the University of Guelph in 2011.

Congratulations, Gavin!
