August 19: There's a New World Order in Food

Posted on Thursday, August 19th, 2010

An opinion piece by CME Prof. Sylvain Charlebois about the impact of climate change on agriculture is featured in today's Globe and Mail.

In the article, Charlebois points to Russia's recent decision to stop all grain exports because of extreme heat as an example of how weather is affecting global food productivity and, as a result, global food prices.

The professor, who recently joined the College of Management and Economics, explains how when wheat is affected, other commodities follow because wheat is used not only to make food but also as rations for livestock. He argues that the changing weather will ultimately have a ripple effect from the type of crops farmers deem profitable to consumer food choices.
