Nov. 26: Economics students excel in the Richardson GMP case competition

Posted on Friday, November 27th, 2015

Management, Economics and Finance students brought their 'A-game' during a third year case competition, sponsored by the wealth-management firm Richardson GMP. The third year Strategy of Mergers & Acquisitions class (ECON*3360) used a case study titled Sirius XM Radio Canada which examined the challenges of integrating a merger between two competitors.

In the preliminary round of the competition, groups of three students presented their cases to Guelph faculty Evie Adomait and Nancy Bower.  The student groups had 15 minutes for their presentations, with a follow up examination by the judges.  The top 4 teams competed in the final round where the students again had 15 minutes for their presentations before executives from Richardson GMP challenged the student groups on their presentations.  The judges then selected a winner, which was announced at a reception in the University Club. The prize for the winners is a day in Toronto with Richardson GMP, including lunch with Andrew Marsh, a Guelph economics alumnus (and one of the College's Notable Alumni).

Winning group consisted of Management, Economics and Finance students in the Bachelor of Commerce program:

  • Michael Raju
  • Dawood Shuaib
  • Michael Walker

The judges from Richardson GMP were:
Andrew Marsh - President and CEO
Elliot Muchnik - Chief Financial Officer
Scott Stennett - Chief Operating Officer
Dan Dervaitis - Director, Business Strategy and Analysis

Congratulations to the winning students and a thank you to the executives from Richardson GMP, for passing on their knowledge and experience to our students.
