November 1: UN special advisor Kernaghan Webb to address CME grad students

Posted on Monday, November 1st, 2010

Kernaghan Webb, a special advisor to the United Nations on corporate social responsibility standards, will address CME graduate students Wednesday as part of the Research Seminar Series. Dr. Webb is the founding director of the Institute of the Study of Corporate Social Responsibility at Ryerson University, where he also serves as an associate professor.

In his seminar, entitled Corporate Social Responsibility: Smoke and Mirrors, or the New Reality?, Dr. Webb will explore the meaning of corporate social responsibility, why it is receiving increasing public attention, its evolution, key issues, and likely next steps.  Dr. Webb concludes that corporate social responsibility is part of a larger move toward what he calls “sustainable governance,” in which a combination of public- and private-sector forces are being called upon to address the complex problems facing society.

Dr. Webb is a special advisor to the United Nations Global Compact on the ISO 26000 Social Responsibility Standard, participating as an international expert in the working group process.  Dr. Webb has served in leadership roles in the development of a number of international and national standards and codes initiatives, including ISO 26000, ISO 10001, ISO 10002, ISO 10003, ISO 10008, CSA Privacy Standard, and the Canadian E-commerce guidelines.
