October 8: Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies honours top students

Posted on Friday, October 8th, 2010

More than 20 undergraduate and graduate awards were handed out at Wednesday’s 12th annual Marketing and Consumer Studies Awards Ceremony held at the Guelph Cutten Club.  Michelle Bergsma had a reasonable excuse for not accepting her three honours in person at the annual Marketing and Consumer Studies annual awards ceremony. The third-year BComm, Marketing Management, student was in Whitehorse, where she is completing a co-op work-term with Outside the Cube.

The Whitehorse marketing firm is handling a number of tourism planning initiatives for the Yukon government, which has afforded Bergsma the opportunity of travelling all across the territory to meet with business leaders.

“We’ll be sending these to Michelle...by dogsled,” joked Dr. Anne Wilcock, professor of marketing management, who accepted the awards on Bergsma’s behalf. Wilcock also read a letter from Bergsma giving highlights of her Arctic adventure.

In total, 14 undergraduate awards, seven graduate awards and two special recognitions were awarded during the midday festivities held in the Trophy Room of Guelph’s Cutten Club.

Interim MCS Chair Jane Londerville, who also served as MC for the event, said the awards are a highlight on the department’s calendar.

“This is our favourite event of the year,” Londerville said. “It is wonderful to celebrate undergrad and graduate student accomplishments in the classroom and hear about their exciting and far-flung activities, volunteering, studying and working at U of G and outside the university.”

Londerville said most students she talks to appreciate the recognition more than any financial reward that accompanies it.

“I think for most students that, although the financial assistance of awards is very helpful, it is the recognition of their hard work and accomplishments that they really value,” she said.

Londerville also paid tribute to the many industry donors on hand to see the fruits of their contributions in action.

“It is rewarding to meet representatives of our donor organizations, introduce them to the remarkable students their awards are helping and express our gratitude to them for supporting our students and programs.”
