About

Biography

Originally from British Columbia, Kerry completed his undergraduate education at UVic before pursuing graduate studies in the UK. He began his academic career at Oxford Brookes University, first as a tenured Lecturer and undergraduate program leader in the School of Planning, as well as Series Editor for the Oxford Planning Monographs for 10 years. Since 2000, much of his work has been geared towards university administration and management, first as Director of Graduate Programs in the School of the Built Environment at Oxford Brookes University, and then as Dean of Business at the University of the Highlands and Islands in Scotland. He returned to Canada in 2008 to join the University of Guelph, first as Director of HFTM, and now as Associate Dean (Academic) for the College.      

In addition to his various roles in education, Kerry has also been a non-executive director for FUSION, a company focused on supporting entrepreneurial innovation in the north of Scotland, as well as serving on numerous advisory panels and steering groups concerned with business education and enterprise productivity. His professional experience has primarily focused on Europe with project work in the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Cyprus, Malta, Finland, Canada and Thailand. Prior to returning to Canada he was also a special advisor for the Cultural Heritage Division of the Council of Europe.  His 2nd book, the Tourism Development Handbook is a core text in a number of educational programs around the world, with both Chinese and Italian translations.

Research Interests

Kerry’s research interests have focused on the broad concept of 'sustainability' and its application to community development and resource management, including visitor impact management, consumer purchase behaviour, heritage and most recently in educational programming and development.
