Wondering what you will do with your graduate degree in biology? This annual CBS Careers in Biology Day is an exciting opportunity for current graduate students and post-docs currently enrolled in CBS to meet with representatives from industry, government, academia and the non-profit sector to talk about the different career paths that await you in an informal panel discussion setting. There will be multiple sessions for you to choose from over the course the morning, organized by departmental themes.

Learn about Different Career Opportunities in the Life Sciences

The morning will feature multiple concurrent sessions where you will have a chance to meet with professionals from industry, government, not-for-profits and academia to learn more about the types of career opportunities that await you.

Each session features a panel of 2-3 representatives from different organizations who will describe what their day-to-day role is like, share tips about finding a job in their field, and answer any questions you may have. Past panelists have included representatives from Roche, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Hospital for Sick Children, PepsiCo, Royal Botanical Gardens, Natural Resource Solutions Inc, OMAFRA, Bioenterprise Corporation, and the Royal Ontario Museum, among many others.

Learn How to Identify and Leverage Your Soft Skills

This year’s event will also feature a special 2 hour workshop “Discover and Put your Strengths to Work”, led by professional development expert Juli Fyfe from Hoffman-La Roche. This workshop is about identifying and leveraging your soft skills - currently considered the most critical skills in the global job market.

Participants will:

  • identify & articulate personal strengths, formulate plans on how to demonstrate these strengths in various contexts (e.g. interviews, teamwork, projects both in academic and workplace situations)
  • clearly define personal values and analyze the impact in interpersonal dynamics
  • learn about self leadership and how to demonstrate these strengths in teaming
  • embracing diversity through the lens of strengths-based teaming
  • using strengths in interviews

Space for the workshop is limited to 35 participants and registrants will be required to fill out a personalize “Strengths Finder” assessment online prior to the workshop. This workshop is sponsored in part by the Master of Biotechnology program.

All events take place April 23, 2020 in the Summerlee Science Complex. Lunch will be served for all participants.

Stay tuned for more information. Registration will open March 16.
