Please see our Getting Started page for information on setting up and accessing your Gryph Mail. Note that Gryph Mail is available primarily for Staff, Faculty and Graduate Students. Undergraduates are provided Google Apps for Education. For alumni please visit the Alumni website for more information.

Gryph Mail is a Collaboration suite comprised of six components: 

  1. Email Server: This component manages the University email accounts and can be accessed directly through a web browser or indirectly through an Email application (for example, Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook , or Windows Mail) or different mobile devices and platforms such as BlackBerryiPhoneAndroid and Windows Phone.
    • Note:  By viewing Gryph Mail through an Email application, the user loses access to some of the application's collaborative tools for example Calendar syncing and access to the Global List Address(GAL), Please visit Desktop Email Software Setup and Mobile Version Setup for more information.
  2. Address Book for organization and collaboration.
  3. Calendar for organization and collaboration.
  4. Document sharing and editing for collaboration.
  5. File storage for organization.
  6. Task management for organization.

The amount of information that can be stored on the system is limited. See Gryph Mail Quotas. Also, there are some restrictions on the size and content of e-mail attachments that can be either sent or received:

  • The size of an email message is limited to 50 MB.
  • Encrypted or password protected attachments are prohibited.
  • Some file types are prohibited.

For information about Gryph Mail, refer to its online help pages. Note that the documentation is produced by Zimbra, the vendor of the system, and it discusses some features not implemented in Gryph Mail; therefore disregard these sections:

Additionally, CCS has extended the features of the original system. See Gryph Mail Extensions.

The Gryph Mail system is backed up daily and each backup is stored for 28 days.  If you require your information restored, complete the online Computing and Communications (CCS) Restore Request.

Service Availability

Gryph Mail is expected to be available at all times, with the possible exception of regular maintenance windows (Tuesday/Thursday from 6:00am – 8:00am, and every 3rd Saturday of the month between midnight and noon). All maintenance activities will be posted to CCS Service Updates.

How Do I Request or Access this Service?

Gryph Mail accounts are created automatically when your Central Login Account is created. Gryph Mail accounts use the same username and password as your Central Login Account. 

To access Gryph Mail directly using a web browser, link to https://mail.uoguelph.ca. These browsers are supported:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Apple Safari
  • Google Chrome

Gryph Mail is available in three versions.

There are three versions because Gryph Mail can be accessed by many different devices, from a computer with a large screen and keyboard to a reader device with a small screen and no keyboard. The following table summarizes the differences.

Version Description Notes
Advanced (Ajax) - Default Setting Offers the full set of web collaboration features. Recommended for newer browsers and faster Internet connections.
Standard (HTML) Easier Accessibility Recommended for older browsers and slower Internet.
Mobile Offers some web collaboration features. Recommended for smartphones. Email attachments cannot be sent or received.

To access Gryph Mail using a standalone Email Desktop Client, follow the appropriate link listed in the following table for setup instructions.
