Connecting to uog-wifi-secure for Windows XP

Follow the step-by-step tutorial to connect to uog-wifi-secure for Windows XP.

Note: Windows XP SP2 users should download and install hotFix to support third party radius servers (Microsoft KB885453).

Configuring WPA

  1. Start / (All) Programs / Accessories / Communications / Network Connections.
  2. Right click on your wireless network connection and select Properties.
  3. Click on the Wireless Network tab.
  4. Click on the Add button in the Preferred Networks section and enter parameters to match the following:
    • Network name (SSID): uog-wifi-secure
    • Uncheck "Connect even if this network is not broadcasting"
    • Network Authentication: WPA2
    • Date encryption: AES


  5. Click on the Authentication tab. Change EAP type to "Protected EAP (PEAP)" and uncheck "Authenticate as computer when computer information is available".
    • CFS users note: If you want to connect to CFS over the wireless network, do not uncheck "Authenticate as computer when computer information is available".
    • EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • Uncheck 'Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable'


  6. Click on the Properties button. Check "Validate server certificate" and "Thawte Premium Server CA" from the list and then check "Enable Fast Reconnect". Select Authentication Method should be set to "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)".


  7. Click on the Configure button and uncheck "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)."
    • CFS users note : If you want to connect to CFS over the wireless network, do not uncheck "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)."


  8. Click OK until you return to the uog-wifi-secure properties window.
  9. Click on the Connection tab and make sure the "Connect when this network is in range" option is checked. If you do not want to connect automatically, uncheck this option.
  10. Click OK until the wireless network connection properties window closes.

Connecting to uog-wifi-secure

  1. Start / (All) Programs / Accessories / Communications / Network Connections.
  2. Right click on your wireless network connection and select View Available Wireless Networks.
  3. Select the uog-wifi-secure and click the Connect button.
  4. A pop-up will appear on the task bar stating, "Wireless Network Connection: Click here to select a certificate or other credentials for connection to the network uog-wifi-secure"
    Note: CFS users please reboot your computer and log into CFS domain and continue to step (6).


  5. Click on the pop-up and enter your Central UserID and Password in the Enter Credentials dialogue box and press OK. Leave the "Logon domain" blank.


  6. When you are asked to accept certificate, make sure the certificate is issued to either acs-annu.net.uoguelph.ca or acs-jnhn.net.uoguelph.ca. Click OK to accept the certificate.


  7. Once you have successfully logged on, you will see either or both of these popups appear in your system tray.
    • Wireless Network Connection is now connected
      Connected to: uog-wifi-secure
      Signal Strength: Low
    • Wireless Network Connection (uog-wifi-secure)
      Speed 11.0 Mbps
      Signal Strength: Excellent
      Status: Connected
