Get Support [10]
Microsoft’s Active Directory (AD) stores information about network components and allows the components to securely communicate with one another.
In the same manner that a telephone directory resolves names to phone numbers, the Active Directory resolves the name of a network device to its network IP address. Additionally, the AD can manage other information, including user authorization credentials (for example, user name and password) that can be passed between systems that would otherwise require individual logins.
AD provides departments with a single tool for managing user accounts including user names and passwords and other network resources.
The University’s implementation of Active Directory is integral to the operation of its Central File Service [11] and is therefore referred to as AD/CFS.
There is no charge for this service as it is provided by CCS.

For the most part the accounts are managed in AD by the CCS Help Centre [12], IDEAS and Client Solutions with IDEAS doing the bulk of the administration. Some departmental IT Admins where the department has subscribed to the Central File Service [11] via Client Solutions have been given privilege to manage certain aspects of there Organizational Unit (OU) such as adding a limited number of computers to the domain, adding members to there groups, implementing some group policy, or changing passwords; however, IT Administrators cannot add or remove user accounts. Administrators, whose departments have joined the CFS or Managed Desktops Services can manage Group Objects in their Organizational Unit via the standard Microsoft Administrative tools. Administrators, whose departments have joined the CFS or Managed Desktops Service can join Computers to the domain via System properties dialogue when configuring the name of the computer. IT Administrators requiring help in performing these task should follow the support procedures provided under your Managed Desktops or CFS agreement
