If you have a wireless router, ensure it is disconnected and you are connecting directly to the wall or phone using an Ethernet cable.
A private IP address (192.168.x.y) means you are not getting your IP address from us. If you still have a private IP, it is possible that it is coming from another person's router - this is known as a rogue DHCP.

Release/Renew [1] your IP address.

Ensure you do not have a static IP set. Often, ResNet users will have computers with static IPs set for home networks - these will not work for ResNet. Here are the steps to check for and remove a static IP:
- Windows 7: Start Menu > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings (left hand sidebar) > Right Click ‘Local Area Network’ > Properties > Double-click “Internet Protocol Version 4” > Make sure IP addresses and DNS servers are set to be obtained automatically.
- Windows Vista: Start Menu > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections (left hand sidebar) > Right Click ‘Local Area Network’ > Properties > Double-click “Internet Protocol Version 4” > Make sure IP addresses and DNS servers are set to be obtained automatically.
- Windows XP: Start Menu > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click ‘Local Area Network’ > Properties > Double-click “Internet Protocol Version 4” > Make sure IP addresses and DNS servers are set to be obtained automatically.
- Mac OS X: Apple Menu or Dock > System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Make sure the computer is set to “Configure IPv4: Using DHCP”.
-
Rogue DHCP. The cause of your connectivity error may be another user who has incorrectly configured a router, which we refer to as a Rogue DHCP.
Windows
- Open command prompt as before, and type "ipconfig /all", then hit enter.
- Identify the DHCP Server listed under 'Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection". If it starts with 192.168, proceed. If it is any other number, you can give us a call at extension 58888 for further assistance.
- Still in the command prompt, type in the command "arp -a", then press enter. This displays a table of addresses. Find the "Physical Address" that corresponds to the IP address of the DHCP server you identified in step 2. Write this down or keep it on the screen, and then give us a call at extension 58888 to let us know you have identified a rogue DHCP on ResNet. We can then help to remove it.
Macintosh OSX
- Click the network icon in the top right corner, then select "Network Preferences".
- Select Ethernet at the left hand side, then note the IP address of the Router on the screen.
- Open Terminal by typing 'Terminal' into Spotlight (the magnifying glass at the top right).
- Type the command "arp -a" into Terminal, then hit enter.
If you need any assistance with the troubleshooting steps, feel free to give the CCS Help Centre a call at extension 58888 for further assistance. We are also available by email at IThelp@uoguelph.ca [2].
