LinkedIn Learning is a video-based training library where users can access online learning modules to build specific skills and achieve personal and professional goals. Taught by industry professionals, modules are delivered in five languages and topics range from software development, website design, animation, audio and music, soft-skill training, photography, and more.
As part of a three-year pilot program, all students, faculty and staff from Ontario institutions have access to the full suite of LinkedIn Learning (formerly Lynda.com) material. The University of Guelph is a grateful recipient of this initiative. This agreement is the result of a partnership between eCampusOntario, part of the Ontario Government, and LinkedIn.com, on behalf of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development.
All U of G and U of GH students, staff and faculty can access LinkedIn Learning from anywhere. All that is needed is an internet connection and your U of G or U of GH credentials.
To access LinkedIn Learning for the first time, see our First Time Login Instructions [6]. If you are on mobile, see our Mobile First Time Login Instructions [7].
For subsequent logins, you can go directly to LinkedIn Learning [8].
Privacy Information
User do not need to have a LinkedIn account to access LinkedIn Learning, and if users do have a personal LinkedIn account, they are not required to connect it to their LinkedIn Learning account.
Users will be given the option of merging their U of G LinkedIn Learning account with their personal LinkedIn account (or given the option to create a personal LinkedIn account and link it). This is not a required step and can be declined. When these accounts are linked, your organization (U of G) will be able to see your learning activity on your U of G account, your profile information, and any courses from your personal account that you've transferred over to your U of G account. Your organization will NOT be able to see your connections, your private messages, your job search activity, or any learning courses you've viewed from your personal account. You have the option of adding completed course to your LinkedIn profile, or sharing courses with your LinkedIn network, but again, these are not required. For more information on this, please visit https://learning.linkedin.com/cx/lyndaupgrade/launch#connect [9]. For information on what people can see on your LinkedIn account, visit https://www.linkedin.com/help/learning/answer/77 [10]. For more details on privacy settings within LinkedIn, please visit https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/92055/understanding-your-privacy-settings?lang=en [11].
Here are a few more points about privacy with LinkedIn Learning:
- Users do NOT have a defacto LinkedIn account once their LinkedIn Learning account is created.
- Only system administrators are able to see end users in the LinkedIn Learning platform. The user information that exists within the platform (name/email/central login ID/affiliation - staff/student/faculty) exists for authentication purposes only.
- For those who wish to create a LinkedIn account, they will only be required to fill in the basic profile (name, title, email).
- For users who are averse to having a social media presence, the recommendation is NOT to create a LinkedIn profile. In this case, it is recommended that they save their Certificates of Completion to their personal files.
- Users who do connect to a LinkedIn account will have additional benefits (they will be able to use the Q&A feature in the platform and will benefit from the data offered on LinkedIn to help customize their learning). If the LinkedIn Learning contract is not renewed once the three-year pilot is over, users who connected it to their personal LinkedIn account will retain their learning history.
Cost
There is no charge for this service. LinkedIn Learning access is funded for all Ontario higher education institutions as part of a three-year pilot from the Ontario Government.

Q: I am concerned about privacy. Do I need to have a LinkedIn account to access LinkedIn Learning?
No, you do not need to have a LinkedIn account, and if you do have a personal LinkedIn account, you are not required to link it to your LinkedIn Learning account.

Q: I already have a LinkedIn Learning account. Should I merge it with my new U of G LinkedIn Learning account?
If you currently have a LinkedIn Learning account, you have the option of merging your existing personal account with your new U of G LinkedIn Learning account. However, please consider that upon graduation/leaving the University, you will lose access to your U of G LinkedIn Learning account, and will not be able to merge it with a new personal account. It is a good idea to save all of your Certificates of Completion in your own files. Your options are as follows:
- Merge your current personal account with your new U of G account, and then as you complete courses, save all your Certificates of Completion (via LinkedIn, PDF, etc.) to ensure you will have those upon graduation/leaving the University. Instructions for merging accounts are below and included in the First Time Login Instructions [6].
- Do not merge your current personal account with your new U of G account. In this case, you would likely want to close your personal account, making sure to save all of your existing Certificates of Completion (via LinkedIn, PDF, etc). You can then use the free U of G LinkedIn Learning account during your time at U of G. Upon graduation/leaving the University, you will want to complete any unfinished courses, and save all your Certificates of Completion.
- Keep your personal account and do not utilize the free U of G LinkedIn Learning account.
Q: How do I merge my existing LinkedIn Learning account with my new U of G account?
Please see the question "Should I link my existing LinkedIn account with my new U of G account?" above to understand the implications of merging your accounts. During the registration process (outlined in our First Time Login Instructions [6]) you will see the prompt, “Do you have an existing LinkedIn account?" If you do have a LinkedIn account and want to merge your previous course history with your new U of G account, and gain the ability to directly share completed courses with LinkedIn, select "Yes". You will then be prompted to enter your login credentials for your account. When the correct login information is entered, you should be able to merge and carry your history successfully. There is an exception to this: if your LinkedIn account was previously connected to another organization, you will not be able to merge your files. If you are affected, contact LinkedIn support [15].
Q: As a U of G / U of GH staff member, can I use LinkedIn Learning while at work?
There may be instances where you take a course on LinkedIn Learning to build skills required for your current, or potentially future, position at U of G or U of GH. Staff require explicit approval from their manager to take any courses during work time.
Q: Does LinkedIn Learning integrate with CourseLink?
If you are a U of G instructor and have the appropriate level of access, you can link to specific LinkedIn Learning content using the CourseLink Content Tool. LinkedIn Learning content should be used as a supplemental resource only. For help integrating LinkedIn Learning content with CourseLink, visit Courselink LinkedIn Learning help at http://spaces.uoguelph.ca/ed/linkedin-learning [13] or contact Courselink Support at courselink@uoguelph.ca [14] or via phone at 519-824-4120 Ext. 56939.
Q: What will happen when the three-year pilot is over? Will I lose access?
This is still to be determined and more information will follow closer to that time. However, it is a good idea to save all of your Certificates of Completion to ensure you have a record of the courses you have taken. LinkedIn Learning offers instructions on the different ways to save your Certificates of Completion [16].
Q: Do I have to be on campus to use LinkedIn Learning?
No. All U of G and U of GH students, staff and faculty can access LinkedIn Learning from anywhere, you just need an internet connection and your U of G / U of GH credentials.
Q: Will I be required to post my certificate on my LinkedIn account after completing a course?
When a course is completed, a personalized Certificate of Completion is automatically generated for you to view or print. You have the option to share to your LinkedIn profile, but this is not required. However, adding your Certificates to your LinkedIn profile, or saving a copy elsewhere (on social media, via PDF, etc.) is a good idea, as students, staff and faculty may lose access to their U of G LinkedIn Learning account upon leaving U of G.
Q: How do I view my Certificates of Completion?
To view your Certificates of Completion:
1. Log in to your LinkedIn Learning account.
2. Click on "Me" in the top right of any LinkedIn Learning page.
3. Click Learning History.
4. Click view/print next to the certificate you wish to view or print.
Saving your LinkedIn Learning Certificates is a good idea, as students, staff and faculty may lose access to their U of G LinkedIn Learning account upon leaving U of G. LinkedIn Learning offers instructions on the different ways to save your Certificates of Completion [16].
Q: How do I save my Certificates of Completion?
You can save your Certificates in many ways - via LinkedIn, social media, or downloading a PDF to save to your personal files. Reminder that you will no longer have access to your U of G LinkedIn Learning account upon graduation/leaving the University, so saving your Certificates of Completion is important. LinkedIn Learning offers instructions on the different ways to save your Certificates of Completion [16].
Q: What will happen to my LinkedIn Learning account if I leave U of G?
If you are a student and you graduate from U of G or U of GH, or you are staff/faculty and you leave U of G or U of GH, you will lose your U of G / U of GH LinkedIn Learning account. You will not be able to merge your U of G / U of GH account with a new personal account. The best thing to do upon graduation/leaving the University is to complete any unfinished courses, and save all your Certificates of Completion. That way you will have a record of all courses you have successfully completed. LinkedIn Learning provides instructions on saving Certificates of Completion [17].
