Education and Employment Background

Dr. Eranga Ukwatta received his PhD from Western University in 2013. He went on to hold a position as postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland as well as a multi-center postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Toronto. Between 2016 and 2018, Ukwatta was an Assistant Professor at Carlton University, where he still maintains a position as an Adjunct Research Professor. He joined the School of Engineering at the University of Guelph in 2018 where he is now an Assistant Professor.

Research Themes

Ukwatta uses Machine Learning (ML) techniques to analyze medical images. He develops novel Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools for 3D medical image segmentation. His work has broad applications within medicine. For example, he has studied image analysis methodologies for patient-specific analysis and modeling of cardiovascular structure and function. Ukwatta has also developed algorithms for quantifying plaque burden using 3D ultrasound. Key areas of focus include:

  1. Translational research on computer-aided diagnostic methods for computer-aided detection of prostate and renal cancers.
  2. Cardiovascular imaging applications for stratifying patient risk.
  3. Applications of machine learning for veterinary images.
