Timelines

Register for the following before the begining of each semester:

  • UNIV*7510 (Full time Registation)
  • UNIV*7500 (Research/Writing)
  • Plus any additional courses discussed with your Advisor

*Hold an Advisory Committee meeting once per year. Your first Advisory Committee meeting will follow your CHEM*7940 seminar in your second semester.

Semester 1

  • Register for CHEM*7840 - (Foundations of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Literature Review)
  • Meet with your Advisor
  • Meet with the other students
  • Review Calendar and departmental policies for your program
  • Begin course work
  • In consulation with your Advisor and the Graduate Coordinator, select and confirm your Advisory Committee
  • Start thinking about and looking at the possible dates for your CHEM*7940 Seminar to be held in your second semester

Semester 2

  • Register for CHEM*7940 Seminar
  • Book and confirm your CHEM*7940 seminar with your Advisory Committee, the Course Coordinator and the Graduate Program Assistant
  • Think about the format, structure, content, literature, research proposal etc. for the CHEM*7940 written Research Proposal. This should occur within the first 6 weeks
  • Prepare and present an oral presentation of your research seminar (to be completed before classes have finished)
  • Attend all of the CHEM*7940 and CHEM*7950 Seminars throughout the semester

Semester 3* and 4

  • Continue course work
  • Concentrate on research
  • Develop research proposal

* If you are considering a direct transfer from your M.Sc. to the Ph.D. Program, consult with your Advisor. If you both agree, please contact GWC2 Administrative Assitant at gwc@uoguelph.ca for additional information. To apply you will need to have completed at least 2 lectures plus CHEM*7940.

Semester 5

  • Complete research
  • Begin writing thesis
  • Obtain procedures for thesis writing

Semester 6

EARLY IN THE SEMESTER

  • Register for CHEM*7980 (M.Sc. defence).
  • Apply to convocate via WebAdvisor or by filling out the Application to Graduation Form and delivering it to the Graduate Program Assistant
  • With the Graduate Program Assistant, ensure that all necessary paperwork is in place for your defence
  • Make sure you have a near final version of your thesis, make copies and submit to your Advisory Committee for comments, corrections and approval (requires a signed Exam Request Form)
  • Schedule and confirm the arrangements for your defence with your Examination Committee, the Graduate Coordinator (or alternate Chair) and the Graduate Program Assistant
  • Plan for the oral presentation portion of the defence
  • Anticipate some of the questions (your Advisory committee and fellow graduate students can help you with this)
  • Defend

Your Graduate Degree Program form should list your lecture courses plus CHEM*7840 - (Foundations of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Literature Review), CHEM*7940 (M.Sc. Seminar), CHEM*7950 (Ph.D. Seminar), UNIV*7000 (Doctoral Qualifying Exam) and CHEM*7990 (Ph.D. Defence).
  • Start thinking about and looking at the possible dates for your CHEM*7940 M.Sc. seminar to be held in your second semester
  • Begin developing research proposal for CHEM*7940 for the next semester

Semester 2

  • Put together an oral presentation of your research semester (all to be done before classes are finished)
  • Do the CHEM*7940 Seminar
  • Hold your first Advisory Committee meeting directly after your CHEM*7940 Seminar and once per year after that

Semesters 3 and 4

  • Continue with course work
  • Begin literature review and develop research proposal for the CHEM*7950 Seminar.
  • Book date and prepare for CHEM*7950 for Semester 5 (completed by the 6th week of Semester 5)

Semester 5

Please note: you do not have to register for UNIV*7000. It will be added to your transcript once all of the paperwork has been submitted to the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

  • Prepare for and complete the CHEM*7950 Seminar within the first 6 weeks. Following this seminar, the format for the upcoming Comprehensive Exam (UNIV*7000) is discussed with your Advisory Committee.
  • UNIV*7000 to be held within 6 weeks of CHEM*7950, but must be compelted before the end of the term.
  • Prepare for the Comprehensive Exam (UNIV*7000).

During the last two semesters

  • Complete writing in conjunction with feedback from your Advisor
  • Discuss possible timing of defence with your Advisor and Advisory Committee.

Semesters 6-11

  • Complete course work
  • Concentrate on research
  • Finish main elements of research

The remaining time to completion depends on several parameters including the success of your project, your work ethic and the expectations of you and your Advisory Committee.

Once your Advisory Committee judges that sufficient research has been completed then you can complete writing your thesis.

Final Semester

  • Register for CHEM*7990 (Ph.D. Defence)
  • Apply to convocate via WebAdvisor or by filling out the Application to Graduation Form and delivering it to the Graduate Program Assistant
  • With the Graduate Program Assistant, ensure that all necessary paperwork is in place for your defence.
  • Make sure you essentially have a final version of your thesis, make copies and submit to your Advisory Committee for comments, corrections and approval
  • Confirm that an external reviewer has been identified and invited
  • Confirm arrangements for the defence with the Graduate Program Assistant by submitting the completed Exam Request Form and the Doctoral Final Examination Arrangements Form)
  • Plan for the oral presentation portion of the defence.
  • Anticipate some of the questions (your Advisory committee and fellow graduate students can help you with this)
  • Defend

Semester 1

  • Start thinking about and looking at the possible dates for your CHEM*7950 Ph.D. Seminar and your UNIV*7000 Doctoral Qualifying Exam to be held in your second semester
  • Begin literature review and develop research proposal for CHEM*7950 for the next semester

Semester 2

  • Prepare for and complete the CHEM*7950 (Ph.D. Seminar) within the first 6 weeks
  • Directly after your CHEM*7950 Seminar, you will hold your first Advisory Committee meeting and discuss the format for the upcoming UNIV*7000 (Doctoral Qualifying Exam).
  • UNIV*7000 (Doctoral Qualifying Exam) to be held within six (6) weeks of CHEM*7950 and completed within the same (2nd) semester
  • Prepare for the Doctoral Qualifying Exam
  • For the information on Course Requirement Checklist
  • Attend all of the CHEM*7940 and CHEM*7950 Seminars throughout the semester

Semester 3-8

  • Complete course work
  • Concentrate on research
  • Finish main elements of research.

Both PhD Direct Transfer from B.Sc. and PhD direct Transfer from M.Sc. students will do their CHEM*7950 (Ph.D. Seminar) and UNIV*7000 (Doctoral Qualifying Exam) in their 5th semester. As such they will be required to select their committee and book their CHEM*7950 in their 4th Semester (Semester 1 of the Ph.D. timeline).
