Serving up cotton candy at the Annual BBQ

The past week has been a busy and exciting one; new student move-in, orientation week, first classes, new faces, new friends, BBQs and world records. On Thursday, the School of Computer Science hosted the Society for Computing and Information Science (SOCIS) Annual Fall BBQ. The event saw hundreds of new computer science students celebrating the start of a new year with current undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty. Thanks to everyone who came out, all of the volunteers, and everyone who organized such an excellent event.

As usual, Professor Blair Nonnecke captured the event. You can find all his photos here. Today, members of the SoCS joined hundreds of volunteers from the University of Guelph and the broader community to take on the World Record Event To Fight Hunger. Starting at 10am, participants had 2 hours to assemble 650 thousand emergency food packages that will eventually find their way to Mauritania in West Africa. The SoCS team packaged 29 boxes; equivalent to more than 1000 emergency food packages, or 6000 servings. It was a great event. Thanks to everyone who took time out of their Saturday to make a difference. The semester is clearly off to a fantastic start. See you all in class on Monday.
