Last Wednesday the School of Computer Science welcomed prospective students and their families to the University of Guelph for the 2014 Spring Academic Open House.

Prospective students and their families were invited to tour the campus, and to take part in several short talks by students, staff, and faculty. The morning began with a presentation about the various programs in the SoCS by Greg Klotz (Undergraduate Program Counsellor & Industry Liaison Officer), Stefan Kremer (Director of the SoCS), and Laura Gatto (co-op co-ordinator for the SoCS).

Later in the morning Professor Judi McCuaig provided students with an overview of how to succeed in first year. A discussion of the technology used in game development was provided by Professor Dave Calvert, including an overview of the Game Programming courses offered in the school. Professor Dan Gillis talked about life beyond programming and getting involved both on-campus and off (see below for a non-exhaustive list of on- and off-campus groups that Dr. Gillis presented).

Of course, the highlight of the day included several short presentations by current students and recent graduates. Ryan Wilson-Perkin talked about his co-op position while showing off Thalmic's Myo armband, Lee-Jay Cluskey-Belanger and Corey Alexander presented the Farm To Fork project, as well as several other apps they have developed over the past year, Justin Carvalho demonstrated how you could build a video game in 30 lines of code using the game engine he built in CIS4900, Oliver Cook demonstrated the Leap Motion gesture control device, and Ben Douek described his experience with the CBaSE Hub Incubator and his winning project known as EveBoard One.

Thanks to everyone who came and made the day a huge success. We're looking forward to seeing you all in September.
