Students clubs gather in SSC atrium

Computer Science Clubs

Our clubs are platforms for you to collaborate,
build your leadership skills and meet other students!

There are several official and unofficial computing and coding clubs at U of G. Clubs provide opportunities to broaden your education experience, networking and educational activities for members to enhance your experience throughout your program.

The Guelph Coding Community (GCC)

The Guelph Coding Community (GCC) is a student organization focused on providing students with valuable, hands-on, extracurricular tech skills which cannot normally be acquired through coursework. Founded in 2013, GCC facilitates student-run workshops, tutorials, demos, and presentations for students of all backgrounds and skill-levels.

GCC workshops are designed by passionate students and guest speakers to teach all manner of new skills. These workshops are targeted at students who share a love of coding and help to prepare for hackathons and events like the annual CS Games. Anyone can sign up to run a workshop! We believe that we learn best from our peers, and want experienced students to help expand the skillsets of University of Guelph coders.

To learn more about the GCC, please visit SOCIS Affiliated Clubs, or follow GCC on Instagram.

Guelph Women in Computer Science

Guelph Women in Computer Science (GWiCS) is a student organization focused on supporting and providing resources for women interested in studying Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Guelph. This includes cis and trans women as well as non-binary individuals. GWiCS hopes to support the inclusion and retention of these groups in our community.

GWiCS aims to:

  • Foster a sense of community amongst women studying computer science in our community through the organization of social and educational events
  • Provide opportunities to the community by making useful resources available
  • Support the retention of women studying in the School of Computer Science
  • Host speakers from industry and academia
  • Organize computer science and technology related workshops
  • Provide education on women's/diversity issues in computer science and STEM
  • Hold open, inclusive and welcoming meetings and office hours

GWiCS was created by two of our students, Maddie Gabriel and Dema Abuadas, the co-leaders of the organization. "GWiCS is an awesome group of like-minded people aiming to build a community of women studying computing at Guelph," says Maddie Gabriel, one of the co-founders. "Dema and I started the club because we noticed that Guelph didn't have a WiCS club like most universities do. The goal is to support the inclusion and retention of women in computing, and also to try to recruit more women into our programs!"

Society of Computing and Information Science (SOCIS)

The Society of Computing and Information Science (SOCIS) is an official student organization for the University of Guelph's School of Computer Science students.

SOCIS represents School of Computer Science (SoCS) students, including those enrolled in computer science, software engineering, the general computing degree and all minors. SOCIS also represents students in the SoCS council meetings (which has far-reaching effects on important topics such as curriculum), and in the College of Engineering and Physical Science Student Council (CEPSSC) meetings.

SOCIS also runs events throughout the year including o-week, social nights, community building events, weekly Guelph Coding Community (GCC) technical events, as well as a hackathon on Local Hack Day. We also represent the University of Guelph at CS games, a collegiate competition that includes challenges from all aspects of computing.

Please join our Facebook group or follow SOCIS on Instagram to stay connected!
