Kari E. Dunfield, Ph.D.
Dr. Kari E. Dunfield is a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology of Agro-Ecosystems, and an Associate Professor in Applied Soil Ecology in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph. She holds a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Calgary (1995), a MSc in Plant Science (1999) and a PhD in Soil Science (2002) from the University of Saskatchewan. She is an Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Microbiology and the Journal of Environmental Quality. She has served for 4 years on the Executive of the Canadian Society for Microbiologists. In her role as Chair of the Education and Careers Committee she worked to highlight the work of undergraduate and graduate students working in the field of microbiology in Canada. Her research uses DNA based techniques to characterize soil microbial communities, and study microbially mediated soil processes. Her research program focuses on the impact of agricultural practices on the diversity of soil microbial communities, and on source water quality.
