Early Resolution

Early Resolution

Early Resolution refers to any approach to resolve concerns under the University’s Human Rights and Sexual Violence Policies, at the lowest level possible, without a formal complaint investigation.

You may initiate an Early Resolution of a complaint through conversation with the Office of Diversity and Human Rights (DHR).

Early Resolution Processes Include:

Personal Resolution & Alternative Resolution (AR)

Personal Resolution

Personal Resolution is managed by you and/or your supervisor in consultation with DHR. In some situations, it may be helpful for DHR to consult directly with your supervisor or other University departments/units to help support an informal resolution and to determine if there are other effective ways to address your concerns. We will ask for your verbal or written consent before contacting anyone on your behalf.

Alternative Resolution

Alternative Resolution (AR) is managed by DHR and usually involves a third party acting as a facilitator in direct communication between you and the others involved using various approaches, which may include: mediation, facilitated dialogue, coaching or other informal resolution methods.

In initiating an AR process, you will be asked to provide:

  • A general description of the nature of the concern
  • The date and location of the incident(s)
  • The number of individuals or witnesses involved in the incident
  • Whether an attempt has been made to resolve the matter
  • Any desired outcomes.
  • Early Resolution is not a fact finding (investigative) process.
  • They do not lead to a finding of a violation of the Policy and do not  lead to discplinary outcomes.
