Position Description:

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Guelph seeks applications for the position of Director of the School of Engineering. The Director will lead the school forward towards its mission, in alignment with the College’s strategic plan. The Director is also responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the School while maintaining an environment that ensures the collegiality and well-being of the faculty, staff and students.

The appointment will be tenured at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The appointment as Director will be for a five-year term, with the possibility of renewal for another five years.

The School of Engineering has a long and proud history at the University of Guelph with engineering being offered in one form or another, from the time when the Government of Ontario started the Ontario Agricultural College in 1874. Throughout most of its history, the engineering programs offered at Guelph have focused on filling the need for a liberal engineering education program to solve problems of the biological world and its associated environment of soil, water and atmosphere. These specialty engineering programs, although small in scale, were highly innovative as they were some of the first programs in these engineering disciplines to be designed and offered in Canada. The undergraduate teaching in engineering at Guelph is also considered innovative and has always included a large emphasis on design, with students participating in design-based courses in each year of their degree, interdisciplinary team work and the development of broad-based problem- solving skills. Today, the School of Engineering has well-established and accredited undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Systems and Computing, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering. At present, the School of Engineering is comprised of 61 faculty members, 35 staff and technicians, 1800 undergraduate students, and over 300 graduate students.

Applicants must have a Doctoral degree in Engineering or equivalent plus a PEng designation or eligible as well as experience leading in and contributing to diverse learning environments. Applicants should demonstrate experience mentoring students and faculty at all levels. In addition to such experiences, a successful applicant must possess a commitment to and demonstrated record of excellence in research, and a commitment to excellence in teaching. This position requires strong communication skills and excellent judgment, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and work collaboratively with the college leadership team.

The ideal candidate is a successful and collaborative leader with excellent communications skills; a leader with a vision that will set the stage for innovative research, learning, and teaching within the School. They have extensive experience in human and financial resource management, and they have shown their ability to lead in a manner that imbues trust and inspires faculty, staff and students in their own commitment to excellence and developing and implementing new initiatives.
