Position Description:
The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) is actively involved in Canadian and international planning and development with a focus on rural, remote, and Indigenous communities and territories. SEDRD invites applications with specialization in international rural development planning and with particular attention to development planning in the Global South.
The most common distribution of effort for SEDRD faculty is teaching (40%), research (40%) and service/outreach (20%). The ideal candidate will be a mid-career professional with the following qualifications:
1) An appropriate PhD degree;
2) Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience in rural development policy, planning and/or implementation in the Global South, preferably in a team environment;
3) Demonstrated ability to raise funds for research and development projects from major public sector granting agencies, e.g., Tri-Council;
4) Established record of publication in interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journals;
5) Work experience and/or educational background appropriate to teach graduate and undergraduate level courses, and to supervise graduate student research in at least three of the following subject areas: international development theory; international rural development planning; rural development administration; social policy/planning; international agricultural and food planning; business, environment and development; social enterprise and development; gender planning; or disaster resilience planning;
6) Certification by a professional planning body recognized by the Professional Standards Board (Canada), or work experience and/or educational background appropriate to qualify for candidate status with the Professional Standards Board within five years of appointment. The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD)
Part of the Ontario Agricultural College, SEDRD reflects the imperatives in building authentic communities where planners, leaders, communicators, landscape architects, the citizens and politicians all play important interdependent roles in community strength. The faculty strive to create a work environment that emphasizes a cooperative, collegial approach to research, teaching and outreach. SEDRD offers the following programs: Bachelor of Landscape Architecture; Master of Landscape Architecture; MSc and MPLAN in Rural Planning & Development; MSc in Capacity Development & Extension; and PhD in Rural Studies. The school currently supports several other programs in the College and at the University with several focused courses on design, communications, planning, sustainable communities, and recreation and tourism.
