Position Description:
The Department of Clinical Studies at the University of Guelph invites applications for a contractually-limited position at the Assistant Professor level.
The Department of Clinical Studies, Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), is seeking applications to fill a two-year contractually limited faculty position in Emergency & Critical Care (ECC) at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree, must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in the Province of Ontario, and must be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care (ACVECC) or have completed an ACVECC approved residency training program. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in clinical emergency and critical care and outstanding teaching, interpersonal and communication skills. The ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere is essential.
The successful candidate will work with two other ECC faculty to provide clinical and didactic instruction in emergency and critical care. The successful candidate will have the majority of their effort dedicated to clinical teaching and service for canine and feline patients in the OVC Health Sciences Centre including participation in out-of-hours emergency duty equitable with the other member of the section. Provision of clinical teaching to fourth year DVM students, interns, and residents of other disciplines, along with training and mentoring of ECC residents is expected. The remaining effort is to be spent on scholarly activity including research and graduate student supervision.
The ECC Service is a fully staffed 24/7 Intensive Care Unit with a well-established resident/graduate ECC program (4 residents), 8 rotating interns, and 13 animal health technicians, 6 of whom are veterinary technician specialists (ECC). The ICU is well-equipped with two ICU ventilators (Drager), a continuous renal replacement machine (Prismaflex), and oxygen availability to all cages. The OVC Health Sciences Centre (OVC HSC) has a full spectrum of specialists available for consultation or support. The veterinary hospital and research laboratories offer state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including but not limited to videoendoscopy (gastroduodendoscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy), point-of-care hemostasis assessment (TEG, PFA-100/200, Multiplate, Stago coagulometer, Throminoscope, Actalyke), echocardiography unit with 3D capability, minimally invasive suite, 1.5 Tesla high field GE MRI, CT, digital radiology, PACS system, scintigraphy, linear accelerator, and iodine 131-treatment facility. The faculty and staff of the Department of Clinical Studies and the OVC-HSC are committed to delivering the very best of patient care.
