Position Description:

The School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph is seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Media Studies Program at the University of Guelph-Humber campus. The position will remain open until filled.

This program allows students to pursue Media Studies from a variety of perspectives and to attain both a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Media Studies and a Diploma in Media Communications. In years 3 and 4 of the program, students specialize in one of five areas of media application.

The position will be based solely at Guelph-Humber and will involve a distribution of effort as follows: 70% teaching, 20% research and 10% administration. The successful candidate will have a breadth of experience in teaching media studies / communication and will be adept at situating media within a wide range of cultural, social, political and historical contexts, along with the ability to demonstrate how media and communication theory and history inform media practices such as journalism, marketing, visual communication and public relations.

Additionally, the successful applicant will advise students and supervise student research. They will participate in University of Guelph-Humber committees, participate in program initiatives and maintain a modest research program in their area of competence.

Applicants should hold a Ph. D in media studies, communications or closely related field. They should have a record of excellence teaching at the postsecondary level, familiarity with active learning pedagogies and experience supervising undergraduate theses.

Assets include: research or applied scholarship on the impact that emergent media innovations and technologies have on the distribution, consumption and impact of media in North America; administrative experience within a post-secondary educational context; professional experience in the media industry; experience developing curricula, including online curricula; and demonstrated participation in extracurricular activities that further the development of a vibrant academic community.

Situated in the Greater Toronto Area, the University of Guelph-Humber is a 5000-student innovative partnership that blends theoretical and applied learning.
